art by jen rose
artist's statement:
Jen Rose gets much of her inspiration from medical texts
and collections of anatomical drawings. She simplifies the
anatomical drawings and then creates patterns by
rhythmically tessellating the image. The images that result
are reminiscent of wallpaper or fabric designs. This work
gives a playful nod to the craft genre. Not only does it
reference William Morris's Arts and Crafts movement but it
evokes the decorative patterns long used to embellish
textiles and ceramics. The craft associations feed into
feminist connections involved in this body of work. By
creating artwork that is traditionally decorative Jen Rose
is following in the tradition of female artists who have
long used craft as an outlet for very serious and poignant
issues.
